Graveyard Keeper 2 beginner guide

The opening throws combat, corpses, grave quality, village restoration, farming, trading and crafting at you inside a few hours. The route below is the order that keeps those systems from competing: escape, establish, bury, then feed the village.

What this route is based on

This page describes the pre-release build, played through the demo. The demo covers the beginning of the game up to the introduction of The Town, so the steps below sit inside that span. Structural claims about later systems come from the developer’s own descriptions; the step ordering comes from pre-release play. Where the two could diverge, this page says which one it is following.

The original Graveyard Keeper is a different game with different numbers, and several widely circulated guides still describe it. Nothing on this page is carried over from 2018 play.

First hours, in order

Each step exists because it unlocks the next one. If you are unsure what to do, take the step that opens a system rather than the one that improves something already working.

01

Leave the ruined district

The opening area is full of mushrooms, breakable objects and blocked paths that look worth clearing. Take what is directly on your path and keep moving. The destination that matters is the surviving group at the town defences.

02

Take the free sword and armour

The survivors hand over usable combat gear before the first serious fight. Take it and do not detour looking for an early upgrade — the opening has already given you the equipment that fight expects.

03

Stay near the guards, then go west

The next fight exists to carry you back toward the gate; straying after zombies is how people lose that sequence. Once the group is safe, the guard points you to an abandoned Inquisitor base to the west and asks you to bury the fallen on that side.

04

Claim the base, but do not renovate it

The property becomes your home, morg, graveyard and first production area. Clear only enough room to move, sleep and process a corpse. Rebuilding the whole site before your first burial is the classic opening detour.

05

Autopsy the first corpse

Put the body on the autopsy table before carrying it to the graveyard, because the first autopsy teaches the rule the rest of the game runs on: white skulls help a burial, red skulls work against it. Keep it simple — advanced extraction is tied to later progression.

06

Finish the grave, including the sign

Carry the body out, use the Blueprint Desk to place the grave, then follow the fixed order: dig the plot, place the corpse, fill the grave, add the basic sign. The burial is not complete until the sign is up, and completion is what produces your Burial Certificate.

07

Hand in the Burial Certificate

Take it back to the guard contact rather than staying to decorate the cemetery. The hand-in is what turns burial from a tutorial step into part of the economy.

08

Push Graveyard Quality to 10

Ten Graveyard Quality is the first concrete target, and it is a better guide for spending than making every plot look finished. Improve graves that already exist as better options appear instead of expanding across the whole yard at once.

09

Switch to the village’s food and firewood problem

Once the story asks how you can help the settlement, the answer is specific: the village is short on food and firewood. That gives the land around the base a second purpose, and makes farming and wood production part of the village route rather than a private chore.

10

Buy seeds only when planting is the blocker

The merchant ties into seeds, trading and later food progression. Establish one working crop cycle rather than spending everything on seed variety at once.

Where the opening leads

The developer’s own framing of the game is four overlapping stages: graveyard, then automation, then Town, then army. Each produces the input the next consumes, and a stall in a later stage is usually an upstream shortage. The opening route above finishes stage one; the zombie workforce and The Town are what come next.

Common traps

Where the opening goes wrong

These are the failure modes the pre-release write-ups return to, plus the structural ones the developer’s own loop description implies.

Treating the escape as a clearing run

The opening area looks farmable and mostly is not worth farming. Every minute spent there is a minute before the base, the morg and the burial that actually open the game.

Rebuilding the property before the first burial

The base is a construction site for a long time. Get the bed, morg and graveyard usable first; the rest of the property can stay ruined while you work.

Spreading across the graveyard

Quality 10 is about the score, not the plot count. Filling empty plots with poor graves makes the target slower, and weak decoration does not compensate.

Skipping the grave sign

It reads as decoration. It is not — the burial is incomplete without it, and the Burial Certificate is the thing that reconnects the graveyard to the village economy.

Gathering materials for content you cannot build

A recurring theme of the pre-release guides: players collect for a machine whose prerequisites are several tech nodes away. Check the unlock chain before committing a day to gathering.

Mixing old-guide numbers with this build

Crop values, corpse values and crafting costs from the 2018 game do not transfer. The sequel changes the Tech Tree, adds graveyard modules, and inverts the skull maths for zombies.

Where these facts come from

Graveyard Keeper 2 is not out yet, so nothing here is reproduced from a finished-game wiki. Each entry below is labelled by what it is: a developer or publisher source, a platform store listing, a press report, a video, or a fan-maintained page. Fan pages are used for terminology only, never for numbers.

  • Fan page dq7reimagined.com — Graveyard Keeper 2 Beginner GuideSource of the opening route described on the beginner page: escape the ruined Inquisitor district, collect the free sword and armour at the town defences, go west to the abandoned Inquisitor base, run the first autopsy, finish the grave and its sign, hand in the Burial Certificate, then push Graveyard Quality to 10. Written against the pre-release build.
  • Store listing Steam — Graveyard Keeper 2 Demo (app 5075680)The demo is registered as its own Steam application and is linked from the main app through the `demos` and `dlc` blocks. Steam publishes no demo description, so the demo’s scope stays unspecified there.
  • Store listing Graveyard Keeper 2 on Steam (app 4358690)The most detailed platform listing: 11 interface languages, single-player only, full controller support with DualShock and DualSense entries, Steam Cloud, Achievements, Family Sharing, and the Windows minimum and recommended specifications.
  • Fan page gk2guide.wiki — Graveyard Keeper 2 Walkthrough: Progression OrderA pre-launch fan page that is explicit about the limits of what exists: it states there is no published step-by-step walkthrough and that any site claiming one before September 22 is guessing. Its four-stage framing (graveyard, automation, Town, army) is a reading of the developers’ own descriptions rather than datamined structure.
  • Fan page graveyard-keeper2-wiki.wiki — Guides indexFrames the sequel’s loops as corpses scored on both white skulls (quality) and red skulls (corruption), with Milestones replacing the original’s teleportstones and Talents softening repeat actions. Used for vocabulary.
Questions

Beginner questions

What should I do first in Graveyard Keeper 2?

Escape the ruined district and reach the survivors at the town defences, take the free sword and armour, then follow the guard west to the abandoned Inquisitor base. Getting the base, the morg and a first burial working matters more than clearing the opening area.

What is Graveyard Quality and why does 10 matter?

Graveyard Quality is the score your burial plots produce, and the early objective sets 10 as the target. It is a better guide for early spending than filling every plot, because improving existing graves raises the score faster than adding weak ones.

Do I need the grave sign?

Yes. The burial sequence runs dig, place, fill, then add the basic sign, and the burial is not complete until the sign is in place. Completing it is what produces the Burial Certificate you hand in.

Should I bury every corpse?

Not once you can resurrect. White skulls help burial quality and red skulls help a zombie develop skills, so a corpse is a decision. Early on there is nothing to resurrect with, so burial is your only route and the route the opening pushes you down.

What should I spend early resources on?

Whatever raises Graveyard Quality and opens the next system. The pre-release guidance warns against decorative building and against gathering for machines whose tech prerequisites are still several nodes away — check the unlock chain before you commit a day to harvesting.

Is the demo enough to learn the game?

It covers roughly three to four hours, from your first steps to the introduction of The Town, and its save carries into the full game. That spans the entire opening route above, so it is enough to learn the burial loop and the early village economy before launch.
