Iron in Graveyard Keeper 2

Iron is the first metal the sequel makes you queue for. The ore sits in the Forest as brown boulders, every smelting route runs through a station you do not own yet, and the figures behind the whole chain come from player-written wikis rather than from Lazy Bear Games.

Iron at a glance

Four things decide how quickly iron moves: where you mine it, which station smelts it, what you do with the first piece, and what replaces the boulders once they are gone.

Community wiki data

The ore is lying in the Forest

Iron ore is not attached to any building. Community wikis place the boulders in the Forest, and one of the two also names the Inquisition Base outskirts and the Swamp. They read brown and multi-coloured rather than grey.

Community wiki data

Smelting has two documented routes

A zombie-worked Smithy I with its Hammer extension is described as turning one Iron Ore plus one Coal into one Iron Ingot. Furnace II, unlocked by the Iron Forge technology, is described as turning three Iron Ore plus thirty Fuel into three ingots.

Community wiki data

Study the first ore, do not smelt it

Iron Ore is a study item, and one page prices the study at one Iron Ore, one Faith and three Science for thirty and fifteen tech points. Studying permanently reveals runes, so the first piece is worth more on the table than in a furnace.

Community wiki data

The boulders are a budget, not a supply

Copper veins, clay pits and sand pits refill after you empty them; iron boulders break once and stay broken. One page counts twenty-eight placed deposits in the world — the number to plan against until a Zombie Miner takes over.

Where to look

Where to find iron ore

Both community pages describe the same object: a waist-high boulder on the ground, warmer in colour than the grey stone around it, placed along paths and against rock faces rather than hidden in a cave.

The Forest is the anchor

The Forest sits in the middle of the map, with the Inquisition Base to the north, the Village to the east and Riverside west. Boulders cluster along the dirt paths and against the cliff faces where the ground steps up, so a run through it turns up several without any one being a landmark.

The Inquisition Base outskirts and the Swamp

One of the two pages places deposits around the Inquisition Base outskirts and in the Swamp as well as the Forest; the other describes the Forest only. The Forest is the overlap, and the only location both sources agree on.

Tell them from ordinary stone

Iron deposits are described as shining differently from stone and reading multi-coloured, more brown than grey, which is why colour rather than shape is the tell. A pickaxe must be equipped before one can be mined at all.

Everything in this section is community wiki data, unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026. Neither Lazy Bear Games nor tinyBuild has published an iron guide, so the locations, the deposit count and the yields all rest on two player-written pages — and where they disagree, this page says so rather than picking a winner.

The community figures behind that description

No developer or storefront source states any of this, so the numbers are reproduced with their provenance attached rather than presented as game facts.

Deposits in the world
28 placed deposits, per community data-mining — community wiki data, unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026.
Ore per deposit
3, plus one extra ore per swing with the Miner perk — community wiki data, unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026.
One boulder, start to finish
Two rocks, five hits each at 2 energy a swing: ten swings and twenty energy for six Iron Ore. The two pages describe the split differently, so treat the arithmetic as unconfirmed.
Respawn
None. A cleared iron boulder stays cleared, unlike copper veins, clay pits and sand pits.
Mining requirement and what raises it
Smithing 3, one rung above the copper veins. A hammer or a set of small tools raises Smithing; pickaxes count toward Building, so upgrading one changes nothing here.

Route 1: the Smithy and its Hammer extension

The first route is a factory station worked by a zombie, priced by the community in refined parts rather than raw material.

Community wiki data

The Smithy I is a factory station

Community figures put its build cost at 6 Reinforced Planks, 4 Bronze Details and 4 Bronze Gears — three refined parts, not wood and stone.

Community wiki data

The Ingot recipe needs the Hammer extension

Building the Smithy is not enough: the Iron Ingot recipe is described as appearing only once the Smithy: Hammer extension is added. With it in place, one Iron Ore plus one Coal makes one Iron Ingot, and the worker needs Smithing mastery 2.

Community wiki data

The same station makes the next parts

Brick and Glass come off the same station, and with the Hammer it also makes Iron Kit I, turning one ingot into four kits — which is how an ingot becomes something a blueprint accepts.

The two community pages disagree here, and not cosmetically. One describes the Smithy plus Hammer extension as the way to make Iron Ingots. The other states that no bench you own can smelt iron ore until Furnace II is standing, and that the automated Smithy only takes over afterwards, using Coal instead of Fuel. Treat the order in which the routes unlock as unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026.

Route 2: Furnace II and the Iron Forge technology

The second route is a furnace fired by Fuel, and it is the one the material prices in tech points.

Community wiki data

Iron Forge is the technology behind it

Community figures price Iron Forge at 35 red tech points, one node past Bronze Polishing, with 130 points spent along the Metallurgy line to reach it. The node is said to hand over three things at once: the Iron Ingot recipe, the Supply: Iron crate and the Furnace II blueprint.

Community wiki data

Furnace II is the bulk route

It is described as smelting 3 Iron Ore with 30 Fuel into 3 Iron Ingots, or 4 with the Fireman perk, and as asking Smithing mastery 5 of the worker. Because it burns Fuel rather than Coal, it depends on firewood reaching the station.

Community wiki data

The building itself gates on Riverside

Community figures put Furnace II at 6 Polished Stone, 2 Polished Bronze and 12 Brick, and both polished items need Sand from Riverside — so the road to a first ingot runs through the river bank.

Why your iron will not smelt

The community pages list three failure modes, and all three are a missing prerequisite rather than a broken recipe.

The recipe is missing from the Smithy

Iron Ingot does not appear on the Smithy until the Smithy: Hammer extension has been added. If iron is absent from a station you have built, the extension is the first thing to check.

The zombie refuses the job

A worker whose Smithing mastery is below what the recipe asks will decline it. A hammer in its tool slot raises that number, and the Iron Hammer is worth +4 Smithing — which clears the requirement on its own.

Furnace II does not list iron

Either the Iron Forge technology is still locked, or no Fuel is reaching the station. Because Furnace II burns Fuel rather than Coal, an idle firewood supply shows up as a recipe that simply is not there.

The tool ratings behind that fix are community data too: rusty tools are worth one, bronze two, iron four and steel six. Each family feeds a different track — axes and pickaxes raise Building, hammers and small tools raise Smithing, shovels and rods raise Farming. Both a Bronze Pickaxe (2) and an Iron Pickaxe (4) count toward Building, so a better pickaxe changes nothing about the boulder’s requirement.

What iron is used for

Ingots are an intermediate, which is why the supply problem matters more than any single recipe.

Ingots become the automation parts

Iron Details, Iron Nails and Iron Kits are the materials behind later buildings and upgrades. One ingot at an Iron Anvil is described as becoming twelve Iron Nails or six Iron Detail.

They make the tools and the weapons

The iron tool set is the axe, pickaxe, shovel and hammer; Iron Armor, the Iron Sword, the Battle Bow and the Battle Pike cover the defence side — which is why the metal matters to the Town as much as to the graveyard.

Community wiki data

No trader sells Iron Ingots

Community pages state that ingots are not a shop item, so a steady ore supply is the only reliable way to keep these recipes running. Ore is sold in small quantities; the finished ingot is not.

The Smithy in The Town

The Town has a Smithy trader of its own, separate from the factory station you build, and it is the one place the material prices in finished goods.

Community wiki data

Upgrading it to tier II, and what that sells

Community figures put the upgrade at 6 Furniture Kit I, 4 Marble Kit and 6 Advanced Detail. The upgraded shop then sells Iron Nails, Iron Details, Advanced Details and Bronze Gears, plus an Iron Hammer, an Iron Sword, an Iron Armor and a Battle Pike — both the building parts and the weapons side of the chain.

Community wiki data

Buying the Hammer is the fastest mastery fix

The material describes buying the Iron Hammer there as the quickest way to raise a zombie’s Smithing mastery before you can forge your own: the mastery gate above, paid for with money instead of ore.

The two other ways to get ore

Neither is a mine, and between them they are what makes a finite deposit count survivable.

Community wiki data

The Trademaster stocks ore from the start

One page says the Trademaster carries a small amount of iron ore from the beginning of the game, enough to try the first iron recipes; another puts the stock at ten Iron Ore.

Community wiki data

The Zombie Miner converts coal into ore

A Zombie Miner station is described as producing iron ore from coal. Community figures put the build at 2 Wooden Plank and 4 Brick, returning one Iron Ore and two Coal every eight seconds with no inputs, energy or mastery check. The Miner perk adds one ore per swing on a deposit, and a zombie working the miner with Magpie’s Eye occasionally turns up a Gem.

The zombie-miner figures are community wiki data, unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026, including the unlock price given as 60 and 10 behind Iron Smithing. Nothing in the supplied material says whether deposits respawn on a timer, whether more are added later, or whether the Trademaster’s ore stock is a one-off or a restocking shelf.

What is still unknown

Iron is the best-documented crafting chain in the supplied material and still leaves the important numbers open.

  • How much iron the world holds. The 28-deposit count is community data-mining, and the two pages disagree about whether one deposit yields three ore or six — unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026.
  • Whether the Smithy plus Hammer extension makes Iron Ingots before Furnace II exists, or only after. The two pages state the opposite order — unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026.
  • What one unit of Fuel is worth, and how firewood converts into it.
  • What the Iron Forge node costs in full, beyond 35 red points for the node and 130 across the line.
  • Whether deposits exist outside the Forest, the Inquisition Base outskirts and the Swamp. No third location is named.
  • What the Supply: Iron crate contains, whether it can be bought again, and whether the Miner and Fireman perks stack on the same deposit or batch.
  • Whether the Town smithy restocks once upgraded, and whether it sells ore or ingots as well as finished goods.

Where these facts come from

Every entry below is labelled by what it is: a developer or publisher source, a platform store listing, a press report, a video, or a fan-maintained page. Fan pages are used for terminology, and where one is the only record of a number, that number is written as community wiki data, unconfirmed, with the date it was last checked.

Questions

Iron questions

Where do you find iron ore in Graveyard Keeper 2?

On the ground, as brown boulders. Community wikis place them in the Forest, with one of the two also naming the Inquisition Base outskirts and the Swamp. They are browner and more multi-coloured than the grey stone around them, and you need a pickaxe equipped before the game will let you mine one.

What do you need to mine iron ore?

A pickaxe in hand and Smithing 3, one level above the copper veins. The pickaxe does not count toward that requirement, because it is a Building tool — a hammer or a set of small tools is what raises Smithing. All of those values are community wiki data, unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026.

How do you smelt iron ore into Iron Ingots?

Two routes are described. A Smithy I with the Hammer extension makes one ingot from one Iron Ore plus one Coal. Furnace II, unlocked by the Iron Forge technology, makes three ingots from three Iron Ore plus thirty Fuel, or four with the Fireman perk. The pages disagree about which route unlocks first.

Why is Iron Ingot missing from my Smithy?

Because the Smithy: Hammer extension has not been added yet. The station can be built without it, but the Iron Ingot recipe is described as appearing only once the extension is in place. If the recipe is there and the worker still refuses, check the zombie’s Smithing mastery.

Do iron boulders respawn?

No, according to the community pages: copper veins, clay pits and sand pits refill in the spot you emptied them, and iron boulders do not. Every one you break is one fewer in the world, which is why ore supply eventually moves to the Zombie Miner rather than back to the Forest.

How many iron deposits are there?

One page reports twenty-eight placed deposits across the world, each yielding three ore. That count comes from community data-mining rather than from the game or its developers, so it is labelled unconfirmed as of September 26, 2026 — and the other page describes one boulder yielding six ore in two halves, which does not reconcile neatly with it.

Is iron used for anything other than tools?

Yes. Ingots feed Iron Details, Iron Nails and Iron Kits, which are the parts behind later buildings, and they also make the iron tool set, Iron Armor, the Iron Sword, the Battle Bow and the Battle Pike. One ingot at an Iron Anvil is described as becoming twelve Iron Nails or six Iron Detail.
