Herbert in Graveyard Keeper 2

Herbert is the Town’s guard captain in Graveyard Keeper 2, and what players want from him is the quest line he opens: a Love Novel he cannot read, the battle that earns it, and the faith he later asks for. Every figure below is reported, not documented.

Who Herbert is and what he gates, in four points

Herbert is a quest giver with two threads and one reputation track named after him.

Game Rant guide

He is the Town’s guard captain

One community guide identifies Herbert as the town’s guard captain and puts the hand-in at the barracks.

Game Rant guide

The Love Novel is the first thread

You get it from Davy in Linda’s Dockside Club, Port Area, after clearing zombies out of the sewers.

Game Rant guide

The gate is 8 Defense Power

The sewer battle will not start below 8 Defense Power, and you cannot build defences underground — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.

Watermaron video

Fighting Spirit Required is the second

Herbert later asks for Faith in a quest named only in a video title and a dialogue excerpt, with no quantity or reward stated — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.

The character

Who Herbert is, and what stands behind him

The material gives Herbert one role, one weakness and one gate.

Game Rant guide

The Town’s guard captain

The guide calls Herbert the town’s guard captain and sends you back to the barracks to hand the Love Novel over.

Game Rant guide

He cannot read

Herbert thanks you and then cannot read the novel, because he is illiterate. That is why the quest line does not end there.

Game Rant guide

What stands behind him

The novel line improves your reputation with Herbert and pays 2 Town Gratitude scrolls; the Metallurgy tree later gates Reinforced Plank and Bronze Equipment behind a node named Herbert 20.

The chain

The Love Novel chain, step by step

The guide walks the chain end to end: a looter at the docks, a battle in the sewers, a set of keys, and a hand-in that rolls into a second quest.

Talk to Davy in the Dockside Club

Davy sits in the upper-left corner of Linda’s Dockside Club, in the Port Area, and asks you to clear zombies out of the sewers.

Form and gear a squad

Unlike the Port Area liberation battle, this one allows no defences. Hire mercenaries, or bring friendly zombies, and meet the squad gate.

Clear the sewers

The guide’s writer brought 4 zombies with iron weapons and armour — one unarmoured archer with a basic bow — from the Gunter and Plague Doctor quests.

Collect 3 Keys for Looters

The battle returns rewards including 3 Keys for Looters — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.

Give Davy one key

Hand one key to Davy for the Love Novel. Afterwards he trades loot for more keys on Lust (scarlet) days, and level 2/3 Jewelers sell more keys.

Take the novel to the barracks

Herbert thanks you but cannot read the novel, because he is illiterate. The quest ends and is immediately followed by one to convince the nun Agatha to read it to him.

Agatha, and the choir

Completing the quest improves your reputation with Herbert and pays 2 Town Gratitude scrolls; speaking to Agatha also gives you the idea of a zombie church choir.

The sewer battle

Winning the fight, and the 8 Defense Power gate

Two sources describe two layers of one fight: the guide states the gate that unlocks the mission, and a creator video explains how the battle is won.

Game Rant guide

The gate is 8 Defense Power

The mission will not start until the squad reaches at least 8 Defense Power, with no room for defences underground — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.

Game Rant guide

Four zombies, iron kit

The guide’s writer took 4 zombies with iron weapons and armour, one an unarmoured archer, from the Gunter and Plague Doctor quests. The video also lines up four.

MCGames video

Flags, smoke and the clock

Capturing a flag removes the green smoke beside it, so zombies stop spawning there; one entrance keeps spawning regardless. The map in the video gives 3 minutes to capture both locations.

MCGames video

Towers and barricades

Its preparation is archer towers on the main approach and spiked barricades rotated so the spikes face you.

MCGames video

The keeper’s kit

An iron sword, a battle bow, iron armour and healing potions for the player, with bronze armour and light pikes on some zombies and two archers. Zombies cannot use swords; a normal potion is two sand at the lab; letting your own zombies die in battle does not change their status.

Every figure here is reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026, and the sources are not interchangeable: the 8 Defense Power gate and the iron loadout come from a Game Rant guide about the sewer battle, while the flag, timer, tower and potion details come from an MCGames video about zombie battles in general.

Keys for Looters: what one key buys

The keys are the reward for the sewer battle and the looters’ currency afterwards.

From the battle: The rewards include 3 Keys for Looters — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.
What Davy takes: One key, for the Love Novel.
What extra keys buy: Loot, given to Davy on Lust (scarlet) days.
Where more come from: Level 2/3 Jewelers.
Where Davy sits: Upper-left corner of Linda’s Dockside Club, Port Area.

The second thread

Fighting Spirit Required, and the faith Herbert asks for

A second Herbert quest asks for Faith, and its only source is a short video whose transcript is dialogue rather than instructions.

Watermaron video

The quest is Fighting Spirit Required

The video title names the quest and its objective together: bring Faith to Herbert in the Fighting Spirit Required quest.

Watermaron video

The route it walks

Its description runs the chain as repairing and upgrading the church, meeting the nun and giving sermons before bringing faith to Herbert.

Watermaron video

Dialogue, not a walkthrough

The captured text is excerpted dialogue about fighting the zombies back with faith. It gives no amount, step count or reward.

The material supplies no numbers for this quest, so this page states none — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.

Reputation, the scrolls and the Herbert 20 gate

Herbert appears twice: as a reputation track, and as a named node in the Metallurgy tree.

Improved reputation: Completing the novel quest improves your reputation with Herbert — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.
The reward: 2 Town Gratitude scrolls for finishing the quest.
The Metallurgy node: A reputation gate named Herbert 20, worth zero points but still requiring the reputation.
What it unlocks: Reinforced Plank and Bronze Equipment.

Game Rant guide

The illiteracy twist is the hinge

Herbert not being able to read is what hands the follow-up to Agatha.

Game Rant guide

A zero-point node is a reputation check

Herbert 20 costs no technology points yet still demands the reputation, so it reads as a pure gate.

What is still unknown

The material names Herbert across a guide and two videos without one developer-confirmed number.

How much reputation the Herbert 20 node checks — the value is never stated — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.
Whether the 2 scrolls are paid by the novel turn-in or by the Agatha quest that follows.
Whether the 8 Defense Power gate is fixed or scales with the squad.
What the level 2/3 Jewelers charge for Keys for Looters, and whether one purchase is one key or a stack.
What loot Davy returns for spare keys on Lust days.
How much faith Fighting Spirit Required wants, and what completing it pays. The video supplies dialogue only.
Whether the church choir is a system you can build or a line of dialogue.
What else the sewer battle rewards besides the 3 Keys for Looters, and whether that fight repeats.

Where these facts come from

Every entry below is labelled by what it is: a developer or publisher source, a platform store listing, a press report, a video, or a fan-maintained page. Fan pages are used for terminology, and where one is the only record of a number, that number is written as community wiki data, unconfirmed, with the date it was last checked.

Press report Game Rant — How to Get a Love Novel for Herbert in Graveyard Keeper 2 — Press guide published 2026-09-26 and captured 2026-10-12, and the source of the Love Novel chain on /herbert/: Davy in Linda’s Dockside Club, the sewer mission with its 8 Defense Power minimum and four-zombie squad, the 3 Keys for Looters reward, the hand-in at the barracks, Herbert’s illiteracy, the follow-up with the nun Agatha, the Herbert reputation gain, the 2 Town Gratitude scrolls, and the Joseph’s keys-for-loot exchange on Lust days with keys sold by level 2/3 Jewelers. It is one writer’s playthrough, labelled reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.
Video MCGames — How to win Zombie Battles in Graveyard Keeper 2 — A 5:05 creator video captured 2026-10-12, cited on /herbert/ for how the squad actually fights: zombies are carried into the battle area and lined up four at a time, capturing a flag removes the nearby spawn smoke, the map allows three minutes to capture both locations, and the keeper’s own kit is an iron sword, battle bow, iron armour and healing potions. It also states that zombies cannot use swords and that letting your own zombies die does not change their status. One player’s save, quoted as stated.
Video Watermaron — How to Get Faith in Graveyard Keeper 2 (Fighting Spirit Required) — A 2:31 creator video captured 2026-10-12. Its title and dialogue are the only record in the material of the quest "Fighting Spirit Required", in which faith is brought to Herbert, and of the church repair-and-upgrade route that precedes it. The extract is a dialogue excerpt and publishes no number, so /herbert/ records the quest’s existence and no figure.

Questions

Herbert questions

Who is Herbert in Graveyard Keeper 2?

The Town’s guard captain. One community guide covers his quest line: he asks for a Love Novel, you obtain it from Davy in the Port Area, and the hand-in happens at the barracks. Completing the line improves your reputation with him and pays 2 Town Gratitude scrolls.

How do I get the Love Novel and finish Herbert’s quest?

Talk to Davy in the upper-left corner of Linda’s Dockside Club, clear the zombies out of the sewers, then give him one of the 3 Keys for Looters from the battle rewards and he hands over the Love Novel. Take it to Herbert at the barracks. He cannot read it because he is illiterate, so the quest ends and is immediately followed by another to have the nun Agatha read it to him.

What Defense Power do I need for the sewer battle?

At least 8 Defense Power, according to the supplied guide — reported, unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026. Underground you cannot build defences the way you could for the first Port Area liberation battle, so the number has to come from hired mercenaries or from friendly zombies you carry in. The guide’s writer used 4 zombies with iron weapons and armour, one of them an unarmoured archer with a basic bow.

Where do I find Davy, and what are the keys for?

Davy sits in the upper-left corner of Linda’s Dockside Club in the Port Area. One Key for Looters buys the Love Novel; after that you can give him more keys on Lust (scarlet) days in exchange for loot, and more keys can be bought from level 2/3 Jewelers.

What is the Herbert 20 gate and what does the quest pay?

A reputation gate in the Metallurgy technology tree, named Herbert 20, worth zero technology points but still requiring the reputation; it unlocks Reinforced Plank and Bronze Equipment. The novel quest line itself improves your reputation with Herbert and pays 2 Town Gratitude scrolls. That the gate exists is community-reported and unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026, and the reputation value it checks is never stated.

What is the "Fighting Spirit Required" quest?

A second Herbert quest that asks you to bring him Faith. The only source in the material is a creator video whose title names the quest and whose transcript is excerpted dialogue about repairing and upgrading the church, meeting the nun and giving sermons. It gives no amount, no steps and no reward, so nothing further is claimed here — unconfirmed as of October 12, 2026.
