Every recipe has a Book writing requirement running from 1 to 16, and the highest figure reachable without a perk is 13. That is why the desk appears on so many “stuck” lists.

Prayers come in two shapes

The plain prayers — Basic, Faith and Money — cost one Story, three Clean Paper and one Ink. The book-shaped ones — Combo, Combat, Harvest, Repose, Excellence, Storms, Likes and Old God — cost one Story, one notebook and one Ink instead, in twelve to sixteen ticks.

Every prayer is graded

The station page lists a silver and a gold threshold per prayer — silver 6 and gold 10 for the Basic Prayer, for example — and says the grade decides how large a sermon the writing can carry. The crafting page for faith covers where those sermons are held.

The rungs come from two fan pages, one of which is a player-run station database: community-reported and unconfirmed as of September 27, 2026. No developer, publisher or storefront source publishes a Writing Desk recipe list, so treat the recipe names as vocabulary to look for rather than as verified game data.

The wall at level 5

Both pages treat this as the trap: a recipe you can see before you can make its ingredient.

A prayer one rung above its own ingredient

A Basic Prayer sits at 5 and takes a Story. The Story recipe sits at 6. So the first prayer on the list asks for something the desk will not write yet, which is the wall most players hit.

The Tavern sells the way past it

The Tavern carries ten Stories from its first tier, so the gap is a shopping trip rather than a grind — reported, unconfirmed as of September 27, 2026.

It is structure, not a bug

Both pages describe the ordering as the game’s design rather than an error, and point at the same fix: buy the Stories in, then write the prayers out.

Stories are not the only input that has to come from elsewhere. Ink is written on this same desk, but notebooks, Hardcover Notebooks for the printing side and the talismans that raise mastery all come from other stations.

How Book writing is actually calculated

Three numbers add up: the levels you buy, every matching tool you are carrying, and any perk that names the recipe.

Talent points alone stop at five

Five level nodes exist and each gives one, so the tree can only take you to 5. Everything above that comes from equipment and perks rather than from more points.

Books and talismans stack

They are different kinds of tool, so one of each counts toward the same total. A Glossary is worth four and a Golden Talisman four; the Glossary is made at the Printing Press and wants a Blank Hardcover Notebook.

The cheap point is a Bronze Talisman

Two Bronze Details at the Jewelry Table for one point of mastery is the least effort anywhere in the game for a point, and a talisman carries it without taking your book slot.

Perks are the last four each

Scribe gives four whenever you work at the desk, and sits three talent points from the root of the yellow tree, through Paper maker. Voice of Faith gives four more when what you are writing is a sermon — reported, unconfirmed as of September 27, 2026.

What is still unknown
