Mastery in Graveyard Keeper 2

Mastery is the sequel’s second progression track: a skill level per work branch that decides whether a recipe will start at all, built out of talent nodes, whatever is sitting on your toolbar, a few perks and the occasional meal. Tech points buy the tree; Mastery decides whether the tree’s unlocks are usable — and most early walls are the second one wearing the first one’s name.

How Mastery works, in four points

Four things decide whether a greyed-out recipe opens: which branch it checks, what your tools contribute, where the points come from, and what changes above and below the requirement.

Mastery is a sum, not a grind

Community write-ups describe the number a recipe compares against as the total of several contributions: talent nodes in that branch, the tools equipped on the toolbar, conditional perks and temporary food buffs. Clearing a Mastery 6 requirement rarely means earning all six points through Faith and Inspirations — Unconfirmed (checked 2026-09-28).

Five branches, and they do not substitute

Building, Farming, Smithing, Book writing and Anatomy each gate their own recipes and actions. A requirement written as “Mastery 6” says nothing useful until you know which branch is asking, because a hammer does not help with a garden bed.

Toolbar tools count even while idle

Tools add Mastery while equipped on the toolbar, including when you are not holding that tool. The reported ladder is rusty +1, bronze +2, iron +4 and steel +6, and a branch can count up to two relevant tool types at once.

Tech points and Mastery are different tracks

Tech points are a currency you spend on the tech tree; Mastery is a rank you earn by playing. Zombie mastery is a third track on the workforce side, and your own Mastery does not carry across to it.

The three tracks

Community guides describe tech points and Mastery as parallel tracks that new players conflate — usually to their own frustration.

TrackWhat it isWhat it gates
Technology pointsA currency you spendTech-tree nodes: recipes, stations and upgrades
Mastery levelsA rank you earn by playing at allA wide range of unlocks across the game, independent of the tree
Zombie masteryAn earned rank on the workforce sideHow strong your zombies can become; your own rank does not transfer

The five branches

The game often shows these as coloured icons rather than text labels, which is why a requirement can look unsigned.

What adds to the number

Four contributions stack into the value a recipe checks. The toolbar is the one most players miss.

Talent nodes

Every branch starts at a base talent value of zero, and the first node in a branch normally gives +1 Mastery. Further points are earned through Inspirations: do the branch’s work, claim the completed Inspiration level, gain talent experience, then spend what it pays in the tree.

Tools on the toolbar

This is the bonus players miss most often. Tools contribute while equipped, even when you are not actively holding one, and a branch can count up to two relevant tool types — Building draws on both the axe and the pickaxe, so two bronze tools are already Building Mastery 4 before any talent point is spent.

The separate “Bronze tools” item

The naming is easy to misread: alongside the Bronze Axe and Bronze Hammer there is a distinct equipable item literally called Bronze tools, aimed at the Smithing branch, which uses its own equipment slot and adds Smithing Mastery of its own. Check every gear slot, not just the two hand tools.

Conditional perks and food

Some perks raise Mastery only for particular recipes, materials or categories of work, so a +Mastery symbol is not automatically a branch-wide bonus — read the description. Several dishes then add a temporary branch bonus for roughly one in-game day, which is enough to clear a single requirement without restructuring the talent path.

The tool ladder, as reported

One community write-up gives the tool contribution as a four-step ladder rather than a formula.

Rusty tool
+1 Mastery
Bronze tool
+2 Mastery
Iron tool
+4 Mastery
Steel tool
+6 Mastery
Tools per branch
Up to two relevant types count at once, so the same quality twice doubles the contribution.

The ladder and the two-tool rule come from a community guide captured after launch, not from a developer table. It does not say what a rusty tool is worth once a bronze one is in the slot, or whether the two counted slots have to be different tools. Unconfirmed (checked 2026-09-28).

Above and below the requirement

Mastery is not always a simple lock, and being over the requirement is worth something on its own.

Below it: the job will not start

For ordinary workstation recipes the rule is described as absolute — you cannot begin the craft. Some systems behave differently: autopsies and star-quality recipes such as cooking can still be attempted below the requirement, but individual work steps have a lower success rate and the final quality can suffer.

Above it: fewer swings per craft

At exactly the requirement a job works normally. Above it, higher Mastery makes each work swing advance the craft by more progress, and because energy is charged per swing rather than per percentage point, the same craft costs less time and less energy. Better gear keeps paying after the greyed-out recipes are gone.

The Iron wall

Why Iron feels artificially gated

This was one of the most repeated progression questions immediately after release, and the material gives it a specific shape.

1

The sequence players hit

The technology is unlocked, the next recipe asks for Mastery 5 or 6, there is not enough Faith for another talent point, and it looks as though the game is forcing another full weekly cycle.

2

The usual cause is the toolbar

Players then notice they are still running rusty tools, or that they never crafted the separate Bronze tools gear item that Smithing counts. Those two fixes are worth several Mastery on their own, before any Faith is spent.

3

A pickaxe is not always the answer

Not every action that visually uses a mining tool belongs to Building. Mining iron ore is checked against Smithing in the community iron material, and a pickaxe counts toward Building — so the tool in your hand and the branch being asked are two different questions.

Zombie mastery is its own track

Community coverage dedicates a full chapter to it, and the practical point is that workforce investment never benefits from your personal grind.

Zombies have Mastery levels too

A zombie has proficiency levels of its own, and it can only carry one tool at a time, so the tool has to match the job. Different tools carry different values: one shovel gives gardening, and tools described as construction give their bonus to that work instead.

Perk points and red skulls

As zombies work with equipped tools they earn perk points, which are spent on adding +1 mastery to a specific skill on the zombie’s Perks tab. How many perks a given zombie can upgrade is described as depending on how many red skulls it has.

Better tool, higher level

Tool quality sets the starting number: a Bronze Shovel is reported as giving Mastery 2 for gardening. The tools themselves come off a Wooden Anvil, and the Iron and Steel Anvils that follow unlock better tiers of the same tools.

Bulk work, not quality work

Because agricultural proficiency affects field productivity, the advice for high-quality crops is that the Keeper should do the job and the zombies should do the volume. That split is the reason a zombie line and a personal routine can run side by side without competing.

How to spend tech points

No point values or thresholds are public as of the v1.0 launch, so the community advice is about discipline rather than arithmetic.

1

Set a banking threshold

Decide in advance roughly how many points to hold before a spending session. The exact number matters less than having one at all.

2

Pick one production goal

Automating a single resource chain or upgrading one workshop line is a goal; “whatever looks useful” is not, because the tree rewards a cluster of related unlocks rather than scattered ones.

3

Buy that cluster and nothing else

Spend only on the nodes serving the goal you picked, then stop — the sequencing rule that keeps both tracks moving is Mastery first, tech points second.

4

Return to banking

Stay parked until the next goal is defined. Players report that levelling technologies compounds, so earlier unlocks make later ones cheaper or faster to reach.

What is still unknown

The Mastery material is two community guides and three creator videos. It explains the loop well and states almost no numbers.

  • The exact Mastery each recipe requires. No source publishes a recipe list, and no point values or thresholds for talent nodes are public as of the v1.0 launch.
  • How much talent experience an Inspiration level needs, and how many points each level grants.
  • Which dishes give which branch bonus, and by how much — the material says several dishes, roughly one in-game day.
  • How much extra progress a swing makes for each point above the requirement.
  • What the perks that add conditional Mastery actually cover, since the material only says they exist.
  • The full list of zombie perk upgrades, and how many a given red-skull count allows.
  • Whether Mastery ever decays, resets, or respects a cap.

Mastery questions

What is Mastery in Graveyard Keeper 2?

It is your skill level in one of five work branches — Building, Farming, Smithing, Book writing and Anatomy. It decides whether many recipes and actions will start at all, and above the requirement it makes work faster and cheaper in energy. It is a separate track from the currency you spend in the tech tree.

How do you increase Mastery?

Community write-ups list four contributions: talent nodes earned through Inspirations, tools equipped on the toolbar, conditional perks, and temporary food buffs. Upgrading a tool from rusty to bronze is usually the fastest single gain, because tools count while equipped even when you are not holding them.

Do you have to earn Mastery through Faith and Inspirations?

No, and that is the most common early mistake. Inspirations supply the talent points, but the toolbar supplies a large share of the final number — the reported ladder is rusty +1, bronze +2, iron +4 and steel +6 — so a requirement of 5 or 6 is often cleared with gear rather than with another sermon.

What is the difference between tech points and Mastery?

Tech points are spent on the tech tree to unlock recipes, stations and upgrades. Mastery is a rank you earn by playing, and it gates a much wider range of unlocks regardless of how many points you have banked. The community framing is Mastery first, tech points second.

What happens if your Mastery is too low?

For ordinary workstation recipes, nothing starts at all. Autopsies and star-quality recipes such as cooking are the exception: they can be attempted below the requirement, but individual work steps succeed less often and the final quality can drop, so Mastery controls consistency there rather than access.

How do you raise a zombie’s Mastery?

Equip the right tool and let it work. Tool quality sets the starting level — a Bronze Shovel is reported as Mastery 2 for gardening — and the zombie earns perk points as it works, which are spent on +1 mastery entries in its Perks tab. How many of those it can take is reported to depend on its red skulls.

Is there a separate Mastery for zombies?

Yes. Zombie mastery is its own track gating how strong your workforce can become, and your own Mastery does not carry over to it. A player with everything maxed personally still fields weak workers until the zombie track is invested in on its own.
